Women Make Up 57% of Displaced Population in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Facing Severe Health and Safety Risks

Women account for 57 percent of the more than 500,000 people displaced by ongoing military conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine (Arakan) State, where they face severe health, hygiene, and security challenges, according to recent research. A research bulletin released this month by the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar) highlighted that displaced women endure deeply insecure living conditions, exacerbated by a critical lack of designated toilets and bathing areas in displacement camps. “Toilets and bathing facilities are totally inadequate.
