What is a light novel and how does it become an anime?

Behind many of today's biggest anime lies a format that often doesn't get as much attention as manga, the light novel. While manga adaptations continue to dominate the industry, a growing number of fan-favourite anime, including Re, The Apothecary Diaries, Overlord, 86 Eighty-Six, and Classroom of the Elite, all began as light novels.
