Russia and North Korea opened their first dedicated road bridge on September 7, 2026 — a one-kilometre, two-lane crossing over the Tumen River whose border facilities can process up to 300 vehicles a day. It is named after Yakov Novichenko, the Soviet officer credited with shielding Kim Il-sung from a grenade during a 1946 assassination attempt in Pyongyang.
