Long-vacant ‘pit’ in downtown Newport nears new chapter with purchase plan

Caught up in scandal, the city block known as “the pit” has been empty for a decade. Now it’s slated for purchase by the Northeastern Vermont Development Association, which plans to transfer the property to the city or a development partner.
