August 23, 2026: The situation in Libya has remained largely unchanged over the last few years. Recently, American officials sought to negotiate a settlement between Libya's two rival governments. The UN-recognized GNU/Government of National Unity is based in Tripoli, western Libya. The rival eastern government is based in Benghazi and run by Khalifa Haftar’s LAAF/Libyan Arab Armed Forces.
