Essay/Joel Freedman: Ontario County’s COVID crisis requires decisive response

In my Sept. 3 guest essay, “Let’s put our masks back on,” I pointed out that while getting vaccinated is crucial to help prevent COVID hospitalizations and deaths, we have learned that these vaccinations, especially because of the delta variant and the likelihood of the development of even more terrible variants, do not prevent the vaccinated from getting or spreading this virus. In these troubling times, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” necessitates reinstating and requiring practices such as face covering and social distancing for both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated in public places.
