De Wever firmly rejects German Chancellor’s idea of using Russia’s frozen assets to fund a loan for Ukraine

The Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist has firmly rejected a proposal by German chancellor Friedrich Merz to use frozen Russian central-bank assets, a large portion of which are held at Euroclear in Brussels, to finance a multi-billion-euro interest-free loan for Ukraine. Speaking in the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr De Wever told journalists that “Taking Putin’s money and leaving the risks with us. That’s not going to happen, let me be very clear about that.”
