7 Jan - The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports a new wave of at least 8,500 Congolese refugees arriving in Burundi following renewed fighting in South Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The refugee movement was the result of fighting that broke out on 26 December 2002 between the Mayi-Mayi traditional militia and the Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie-Goma (RCD-Goma) in rural areas of South Kivu.
